Over 4,000 stores across the country to launch campaign on 9 October with new donation method
More and more people in Germany are finding it difficult to get enough to eat every day. They seek help from Tafel food banks, but the food banks don’t have enough food donations to support all of their clients. That’s why the nationwide Tafel campaign sponsored by REWE and nahkauf is so important. It takes place from 9 to 22 October.
The aim of the initiative “Gemeinsam Teller füllen” (“Filling plates together”) is to raise 3 million euros in food donations together with REWE customers. The donations will benefit the more than 960 Tafel food banks throughout Germany.
This year’s campaign features a new donation method where customers can donate non-perishable foods like chickpeas, apple sauce, porridge oats, rice, tomato purée, and peas with carrots worth 5 euros to the Tafel food banks. Paper bags filled with these products are available for purchase at REWE stores. Following payment, the donation bag must be placed at the designated collection point. To ensure that as few paper bags are used as possible, store employees regularly return them to their original location so they can be reused by other customers. The result is a sensible circular system. Alternatively, customers can purchase a 5 euro donation card and place it in the donation box at the checkout counter. At the end of the campaign, the donations automatically recorded via the checkout system will be used to purchase the corresponding amount of food and given to the local food banks. REWE is donating additional food worth 200,000 euros to the Tafel food banks.
The bag campaign has been run by REWE and Tafel Deutschland since 2011. Thanks to its customers, a total of 5 million Tafel bags have been donated and more than 4.3 million needy people have received assistance.
