“Of course, digitalisation is a joint endeavour.”

A shared vision to bring local produce to every plate. In the latest Opinion of the Month, Clemens Tsalikis, Chief Operating Officer of Loql.com, talks about how local producers and REWE retailers can now connect digitally.

Dear Reader,

Loql.com is our digital platform that connects buyers with local producers. Or to put it another way, Loql is a bit like a dating app for local producers and REWE stores. That’s because the app has a similarly simple design and focuses on networking. However, its purpose is also to drive the digitalisation of daily business processes.

The idea is based on three strengths of the REWE Group. Firstly, our retailers have extremely varied local and regional product ranges and close relationships with local farmers and producers, which often go back decades. Secondly, REWE has a strong regional position, and our category management teams also build and expand long-term local partnerships on the ground. They are always on hand to advise and support both the retailers and the producers. Last but not least, the REWE Group has been promoting digitalisation for years in Germany and Europe. One example is the REWE Pick&Go stores, where you can buy items without going through the classic checkout process. Loql has combined these three strengths since 2023.

Our goal is to strengthen the local product ranges and empower stakeholders while simplifying and digitalising the relevant processes for all concerned. Producers and in-store employees should be able to devote their full attention to production or the customers and should not have to waste time on order processes that have to be faxed, acquisitions, coordinating by telephone or paperwork that is missing signatures.

With the Loql app, orders can be confirmed directly in the field. It also enables spontaneous coordination and short-notice changes of plan. What’s more, Loql offers additional sales channels for regional farmers and manufacturers. Suppliers post their product portfolio in the app, which displays stores in the local area. The B2B app thus brings together REWE stores and regional producers.

Loql also brings more diversity to the local product shelves and provides the transparency that policymakers, too, are calling for over the origin of the foods. Our figures show the average distance between producers and REWE stores for orders via the platform to be 20.3 kilometres.

Farmers in Germany are open to greater digitalisation.

For me, Loql is also a tool for strengthening local supply chains, farmers in particular, through direct and equal business relationships. After all, more than 60 percent of the orders placed with Loql go directly to the farmers. From personal experience, I know how much heart and soul the producers put into their produce and will never forget the enthusiasm with which they talk about new potato varieties or their animals.

I would therefore like to speak up for agriculture before the political decision-makers and attest to the fact that farmers in Germany are open to greater digitalisation. Our platform has been received with curiosity and positivity. We have seen very little fear of digital innovation. The Loql app has an intuitive design, and all new users complete a 30-minute onboarding to help them get started. I also believe that our platform and the simplified processes struck a chord. Digitalised processes and reducing red tape are becoming increasingly important for agriculture. The REWE Group is working hard to respond to this by offering practical solutions for our partners in agriculture. And, of course, digitalisation is a joint endeavour. We are committed to making it as straightforward as possible. Because it is only when things are genuinely easier that users will have a lasting appetite to explore new avenues.

Our experts are developing Loql entirely in house, helped in no small part by direct feedback from retailers and local producers. The platform was recently moved from the pilot phase to a national rollout, which has created more direct supply relationships in the vicinity of our stores. By the way, producers can supply to a single REWE store. This also strengthens regional structures. And Loql is making an important contribution to this.

Yours Clemens Tsalikis
