The REWE Group introduces innovative coating technique

A fructose-based coating can double the shelf life of avocados

PENNY and REWE are trying out the innovative coating technique to extend the shelf life of selected fruits in up to 860 stores.

From Monday (27/01), customers in about 360 PENNY stores across North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate can buy Moroccan-grown avocados that have been covered with a fructose-based protective coating. They will also be on sale in several hundred REWE stores under the “Feine Welt” brand from Wednesday (29/01).

Tests in the warehouse previously showed that it is possible to double the shelf life of avocados – up to eight days with the right conditions. For the REWE Group, the coating is a further step forward in its long-term sustainability strategy to halve the amount of food waste by 2030. The test is running indefinitely.

We see the coating as an innovative procedure to significantly lengthen the shelf life of selected fruits, such as avocados, limes and other citrus fruits, as well as pome fruits, such as apples and pears. This is beneficial both for us as the retailer and for our customers since fewer avocados are thrown away. We really hope that our customers will choose these products to support us in our fight against food waste, said Eugenio Guidoccio, Ultra‑Fresh 1 Products Manager at the REWE Group.
