Local partnerships in agriculture – a win-win for both sides

Cooperation benefits both stores and farmers

Reading time: 2 min.

The shelves have been stocked with popular summer produce such as asparagus, leafy greens and strawberries for some weeks now. But where do these foods come from? The REWE Group has a policy of sourcing produce locally, which offers numerous benefits for customers and farmers alike.

Local produce in REWE stores

A short journey from field to store would not be possible without strong relationships with local producers. Both REWE and PENNY offer a diverse range of fresh, high-quality, locally sourced products in their stores.

But it is not only the customers who benefit. The farmers do, too. For Christian Berghs-Trienekens from ‘BT Gemüse’, the partnership with PENNY has meant guaranteed sales and reliable growth.

Besides opportunities for direct marketing, Christina Ingenrieth from Genholter Hof appreciates the greater brand recognition the partnership with REWE has brought. She hopes to continue the partnership for decades to come.

Local partnerships are very important for us because they allow us to distribute our products to a wider group of customers than would be possible with the farm shop alone.

A win-win situation

Heinrich Esser, a farmer in Vettweiß-Kelz (Rhineland), supplies around 30 local REWE stores directly from his farm. Thanks to the short distances, asparagus that is harvested at midday can be purchased directly from the REWE stores the very next morning. The farmer sees the local partnerships as an opportunity to distribute the farm’s produce to many customers.

Local partnerships provide fresh local produce for customers in the REWE stores and growth opportunities for farmers.
