REWE Group invests 600 million euros in new logistics center

Reading time: 6 min.

Cologne – REWE Group is investing 600 million euros in the modernization of its logistics center in Wiener Neudorf over the next few years. This is the largest single investment ever made by a private company in Lower Austria and sets new standards for future-oriented, sustainable retail logistics in Austria. In future, around 2,500 locations will be supplied – particularly in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. The investment is a clear commitment by REWE Group to Austria as a business location, to the Wiener Neudorf community and to the future of food supply. Construction will start in the second quarter of 2026.

The REWE Group will transform the site into a sustainable, innovative logistics center with state-of-the-art warehouse technologies by 2030. From there, the company will supply its BILLA, BILLA PLUS, BIPA and ADEG stores as well as cooperation partners, such as petrol station stores, with several 10,000 products from the dry range of the total product range of around 100,000 items throughout Austria. With the new logistics center, the entire goods traffic of the location will be bundled in one building. REWE Group is thus creating new potential for strengthening supply security and improving economic and ecological efficiency across the entire supply chain.

Peter Maly, Rewe Group Management Board member for Logistics and Supply Chain Management and COO Rewe, explains: This project is a milestone for our entire group of companies. With the new logistics center, we are creating the infrastructural prerequisites for modern, efficient and sustainable retail. The investment is a strong commitment to the innovative strength of our Group and to the future of cooperative retail.

In addition to securing existing jobs, the site will also create new, future-proof jobs – particularly in the areas of technology, IT and automated logistics systems. With this logistics center, we are sending a clear signal for Austria as a business location and investing in the future of food supply. In Wiener Neudorf, we are creating one of the most modern retail logistics platforms in Europe, which will be a sustainable and resilient backbone for our supply chain, emphasizes Marcel Haraszti, Management Board of REWE International AG. We are bundling our flows of goods, reducing transport volumes, increasing supply security and creating new jobs for highly qualified employees in logistics, technology and IT.

Lighthouse project for the economy, climate and security of supply

By 2030, the logistics center will be the new heart of REWE Logistik in Austria and at the same time a lighthouse project for the Logistics Strategy 2030. The measures to achieve the strategic goals – strengthening supply security and reducing along the entire supply chain – will be implemented in Wiener Neudorf according to the latest standards. Thanks to the high degree of digitalization of the logistics center and hybrid technical solutions, REWE Group is streamlining transport routes and goods flows with the new logistics center, which will allow even closer cooperation with regional partners in the future. The concept also focuses on energy efficiency, self-sufficiency and a high level of demand coverage through renewable energy.

Thanks to detailed advance planning using state-of-the-art data analysis, robotic technology in goods picking and a combination of manual, semi-automated and fully automated systems, more goods can be delivered in a shorter space-saving time in future.

Highest standards of innovative strength, future vision and resilience

Thanks to a hybrid logistics strategy, almost a third of all goods deliveries in Austria will be handled on 150,000 square meters in Wiener Neudorf in future. The structures previously spread across several buildings will be brought together in a central high-performance building: Thanks to detailed advance planning using state-of-the-art data analysis, robotic technology in goods picking and a combination of manual, semi-automated and fully automated systems, more goods can be delivered in a shorter space-saving time in future. This also includes a fully automated high-bay warehouse with approx. 87,000 pallet spaces and a delivery capacity of approx. 116 million order units per year. This is only possible with a large team of dedicated employees on site. In addition, the site will have its own sorting center for recyclable materials for sustainable collection and recycling management. The 12,500 square meter photovoltaic area will cover around 20 percent of the logistics center’s annual energy requirements in the currently planned first expansion stage.

We are building the infrastructure of tomorrow here – embedded in our entire network in Austria. The central goals of REWE Group’s Logistics Strategy 2030 are to strengthen supply security and reduce  CO2 along the entire supply chain, explains Christian Hörner, Managing Director Warehouse & Transport at REWE International AG. The logistics center in Wiener Neudorf is a major step towards achieving these goals and will be groundbreaking for REWE Group’s international retail logistics.

Isabella Handler, Overall Project Manager at REWE International AG, emphasizes the importance of technological implementation: From the very beginning, our aim was to create a forward-looking logistics platform that combines efficiency, sustainability and security of supply. By bundling logistics in Wiener Neudorf, we are also setting the highest standards in the digitalization and automation of retail logistics.

We see it as our responsibility to think not just about today, but about the coming decades, summarizes Marcel Haraszti. This center will change the way we think about supply – more sustainable, more digital and more resilient.
