The REWE GROUP is a strong partner for local agriculture. Through our REWE and PENNY retail chains and our Center of Excellence for Agriculture, we are committed to supporting regional supply chains and strengthening local structures through a wide range of projects and programs.

    REWE and PENNY rely on regional and local products among the pioneers in the German food retail sector. Our product range combines EU-certified organic-certified, regional, and local products — selected according to clearly defined origin and production criteria, which we specify for each category.

    In this context, open dialogue, transparent processes, and reliable, long-term partnerships are particularly important to us. After all, appreciation for agriculture is not a momentary phenomenon, but an ongoing commitment that we pursue together with our partner throughout the entire chain, from the field to the markets, we want to continue driving forward.

    Local partnerships in agriculture – a win-win for both sides

    A short journey from field to store would not be possible without strong relationships with local producers. Both REWE and PENNY offer a diverse range of fresh, high-quality, locally sourced products in their stores.

  • Local Partnerships

    We regarding our local responsibility and reliable cooperation on equal footing with small local businesses in the immediate vicinity of our stores. Our retailers are so deeply rooted in their regions that thousands of close partnerships have already been established with suppliers, some of which have spanned generations, such as the REWE local partnership for fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meat, and sausage. REWE and PENNY work with over 33,000 local producers.

  • Agriculture Competence Center

    We bring together experts from agriculture, science, and business together, all stakeholders to make them visible within this process and solutions. Going beyond the narrow confines of industry-specific solutions, the Competence Center brings together expertise from the retail and agricultural sectors to generate fresh ideas, innovative approaches, and new avenues for collaboration. Initially, solutions will be developed in the clusters of dairy, meat, innovation, regionality, and fruits and vegetables, for example, through tripartite agreements for transparent pricing and long-term partnerships with local agriculture.

    Direct exchange with our domestic agricultural sector is more important than ever. At this year’s Green Week in Berlin, REWE Group once again demonstrated that a tangible course for sustainable agriculture in Germany can only be set through even stronger joint commitment from all players along the value chain.

  • Regionality

    Regional products are highly valued by consumers. We are responding to this trend with our offerings.

    Since 2012, the nationwide “REWE Regional” brand for regional products has indicated the region of origin on the packaging. Since 2023, PENNY has offered the “Marktliebe Regional” brand for regional fruits and vegetables and the “Mühlenhof” brand for regional meat. Since 2014, we at REWE and PENNY in Germany have labeled a total of over 1,700 items with the “Regional Window”.

  • Organic Products

    We are working on a wide range of initiatives and projects to promote a balanced diet. For example, with our wide selection of organic products. As EU-certified products, they stand for organic farming methods, enhanced animal welfare standards, and the avoidance of synthetic pesticides. We can make a positive contribution in this area, particularly with our private-label brands.

    With our private-label brands at REWE and PENNY, we offer a wide selection of organic products.

    We have strong partners. In Germany, REWE has been collaborating with the organic association Naturland since 2009, and PENNY since 2023. REWE is also a member of the Demeter organic association and a partner of Bioland. As REWE, we have been supporting NABU since 2015 Farmers farmers in their transition from conventional to organic farming.
