Biodiversity is declining: About one million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction. We at the REWE Group are aware that our business activities have an impact on biodiversity. Therefore, it is up to us to preserve biological diversity — for example, by purchasing appropriately certified products and, in particular, through the cultivation and production of our REWE store brands.

REWE Group Promotes Secure Supply Chains

Extreme weather events such as flooding, water shortages, and violent storms are no longer a rarity today. Rather, they pose a growing threat that is further exacerbated by the ongoing climate crisis. To address these challenges, Eurogroup, a subsidiary of the REWE Group responsible, among other things, for sourcing fruits and vegetables in Spain, has launched the TRES producer program.

Protecting biodiversity — we can only do it together

Since 2010, the REWE Group, together with NABU and numerous agricultural businesses, has been working to preserve biodiversity in conventional fruit and vegetable farming in Germany. This collaboration has grown into the largest partnership of its kind in Germany — and demonstrates how targeted measures implemented directly on farmland contribute to promoting biodiversity.

Over 800 animal species have been recorded in restored green spaces

Exemplary: BILLA has created several hectares of flowering areas of the highest ecological quality. This is the result of a zoological monitoring study conducted by the Institute of Zoology at the University of Graz (Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz) on restored green spaces near BILLA stores.

Agriculture and Nature Conservation for Greater Biodiversity

Since 2010, we have been committed to protecting biodiversity in conventional fruit and vegetable farming in Germany and Austria. Together with the Lake Constance Foundation, BirdLife Austria, the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union of Germany (NABU), and now more than 455 growers, we support numerous measures on fruit orchards and vegetable fields as well as in adjacent areas.

Since 2014, we have been working with the nature conservation organization BirdLife Austria on the “Blühendes Österreich” project to protect endangered ecological habitats. The initiative funds the conservation and maintenance of threatened natural areas and extensive agricultural lands, as well as projects focused on nature and sustainability education, thereby promoting local biodiversity.

When designing our product ranges, preserving biodiversity is an important criterion for us. Biodiversity criteria can be incorporated through certification systems such as organic, Fairtrade, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®), the Rainforest Alliance, and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). They are also applied within the guidelines we have formulated for raw materials such as palm oil, fish, and cocoa. The analyses conducted as part of our project with NABU e. V. also examine impacts on biodiversity. This enables us to take measures to conserve and promote biodiversity in selected projects.
