Sustainability Projects

As the REWE Group, we are part of the lives of millions of customers. We want to help them make informed purchasing decisions, for example by providing information on plant-based foods, organic products, and regional products.

Glass-fronted refrigerated display cases, modern refrigerants, and LED lighting are examples of measures we’ve implemented in our stores and warehouses. For us, however, climate protection also means reducing greenhouse gas emissions in logistics and throughout our supply chains. As early as 2009, the REWE Group set its first target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the REWE Group has committed to setting short- and long-term company-wide reduction targets in line with the net-zero standard of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets also take into account emissions along the supply chain.

The protection of human rights is a top priority for the REWE Group. In a statement of principles, we have laid out clear guidelines—both for our own business operations and with regard to our global supply chains. These principles also apply to the supply chains of our private-label products and form the framework for our actions in the areas of human rights and labor standards. After all, we can only achieve long-term business success if the impact of our business activities is in harmony with people and the environment.

From Panama to Austria: In collaboration with local partners, we carry out projects focused on biodiversity along our supply chains—for example, our project with NABU, “Gemeinsam Boden gut machen” (Working Together to Improve the Soil). In doing so, we rely on partnerships, such as the one with our strategic partner, the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union of Germany (NABU). Together, we agree on specific areas of focus, such as marine conservation, plastic, forest conservation and paper, resource conservation, and the promotion of biodiversity.
