New REWE To Go at Frankfurt Airport: first cashierless store at an airport in Germany

Reading time: 4 min.

  • Lekkerland opens unmanned, AI-based REWE To Go pilot store in Terminal 1

  • Wide range of fresh snacks, beverages and coffee specialties; also selected drugstore items, travel supplies and groceries

  • Convenient care for travelers, visitors and employees around the clock, seven days a week

Frankfurt am Main/Frechen, February 20, 2025 – German premiere at Frankfurt Airport: the new REWE To Go in Terminal 1 is the first cashierless store at an airport in Germany. Airport operator Fraport and Lekkerland, a subsidiary of the REWE Group, officially opened the unmanned convenience store yesterday (February 19, 2025). The pilot store can be found in the public arrivals area of Terminal 1 on Level 1 in Section B and can be used by visitors, travelers and employees alike.

Thanks to artificial intelligence, the store does not require cash registers or sales staff. Instead, cameras record which products customers take. When they leave the store, the invoice amount is automatically debited from the cashless payment method that was scanned when they entered. Customers receive the receipt via their smartphone. Accepted means of payment are giro cards, Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Around 570 articles to choose from

Customers can buy fresh snacks such as sandwiches and salads, drinks and coffee specialties as well as ice cream, snacks and confectionery in the 70 square meter pilot store. However, the range also includes selected travel supplies and drugstore items such as charging cables and toothbrushes as well as food, which comprises around 570 items.

Travelers, visitors and employees already have a wide range of options for shopping and eating at Frankfurt Airport. The new REWE To Go is an innovative addition to our range of around 280 stores, service providers and restaurants, says Karl-Heinz Dietrich, Head of Retail and Letting Management at Fraport AG.

Frankfurt Airport is a perfect location for this special REWE To Go, which enables fast and convenient supply around the clock, adds Mehmet Tözge, Vice President Smart Stores at Lekkerland.

This is a pilot store with which Lekkerland wants to gain experience with the use of this smart store concept at such a location. We have tested and developed the concept intensively over the past few years. Now we are excited to see how it is received by customers at Frankfurt Airport, says Mehmet Tözge.
