REWE launches plant-based ham and sausages with a meat-like texture

Ham alternative "LEKKA" from start-up Project Eaden impresses with its full flavor

From now on, customers can expect an exciting new product in REWE stores: the plant-based hams and sausages of the LEKKA brand. These innovative plant-based products boast a full flavor, an appealing appearance and a texture that is authentically reminiscent of real ham and sausages.

The driving force behind this innovation is the Berlin-based startup Project Eaden. Their ambitious goal: We are here to make the switch away from meat consumption a matter of course. Our products impress with their taste, texture and nutritional value, explains co-founder Jan Wilmking.

The innovative LEKKA products combine a nutrient-rich mixture of plant-based proteins from wheat, peas and field beans and offer a tasty alternative to conventional ham. LEKKA products are therefore full of vegetable proteins and fiber. Unlike many processed sausage products, they are also free from nitrates, cholesterol, antibiotics and animal hormones, making them a more sustainable choice.

To create a meat-like experience, Project Eaden has developed a novel fiber technology. This technology gives the meat alternatives a remarkable look and bite and enables the production of whole plant-based meat cuts. According to co-founder Dr. David Schmelzeisen, this proprietary technology is versatile and highly scalable for different types of meat.

Clément Tischer, Head of Foodtech REWE Group, is enthusiastic about the current market launch: LEKKA is not a replacement – it’s an upgrade. What Project Eaden is delivering here shows what FoodTech can do today: authentic, technologically sophisticated and very tasty. This is exactly the kind of product that belongs in everyday life – and from now on on the shelves at REWE, so that trial and error quickly turns into enthusiasm.
