A shopping cart with long-life foodstuffs such as pasta and flour stands in the foreground of a supermarket. Behind it, many brown paper bags with recycling symbols are piled up. There is a green sign on the shopping cart advertising a donation campaign for the food bank.

For a growing number of people in Germany, even everyday grocery shopping is becoming a financial burden. The food banks are a last resort for many people living in poverty. However, they too are increasingly reaching their limits due to rising demand and scarcer food donations. Against this backdrop, REWE and nahkauf are once again launching the nationwide “Gemeinsam Teller füllen” (“Filling plates together”) campaign: from 23. From February 23 to March 7, customers in more than 4.200 stores and in the REWE Onlineshop the opportunity to purchase donation bags with long-life food. Every donation then benefits the more than 970 food banks in Germany and helps to maintain their work in these challenging times.

The donation bags contain products that are currently particularly urgently needed by the food banks. The following items were selected for this year in close cooperation with the umbrella organization Tafel Deutschland: chickpeas, mushrooms, dumplings, pasta, pesto and tortelloni.

It’s that easy: Donate at the store or online

Customers have several opportunities to get involved with a donation: Prepared paper bags with the selected food are available in the store. These can be purchased at the checkout for 5.00 euros and then handed in at a designated collection point. Alternatively, there is the option of buying a donation card, also worth 5.00 euros, and dropping it into a donation box at the checkout. Regardless of the option chosen, the same food will be delivered to the food banks: the donations collected will be converted into specific quantities of goods at the end of the campaign and handed over to the local food bank of the respective store.

Participation is also possible via an order in the REWE online store – via delivery service and pick-up service. The donation card can be added to the digital shopping cart during the campaign period. As in the store, the donations are recorded via the checkout system, converted into food quantities and passed on to the food banks.
