The REWE delivery service is focusing on electromobility: 64 new eSprinters from Mercedes-Benz are now making deliveries in Berlin and, from September, also in Neuss. The vehicles are the largest single order placed by REWE Lieferservice with its new partner Mercedes-Benz. REWE Lieferservice is investing almost five million euros in vehicles and the expansion of the charging infrastructure. The new electric vehicles will also make an important contribution to REWE Group’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The partnership with Mercedes-Benz follows a strategic direction for the further development of the company’s own delivery fleet: Wherever possible, electric vehicles will replace the existing vehicles with combustion engines in the delivery service. This is a decisive step on our way to emission-free delivery options,
says Clemens Bauer, Director REWE E-Commerce. We opted for the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter because it not only meets our requirements in terms of Sustainability and efficiency, but also impresses with its flexibility. With these vehicles, we offer our customers a more environmentally friendly and reliable delivery service,
continues Clemens Bauer.
We are delighted to support REWE with our eSprinter vehicles and to be able to make a contribution to making everyday life easier for many people. The vehicles are ideally suited to the requirements of our commercial customers in terms of their efficiency and range. They show that locally CO2-emission-free driving, impressive performance and comfort can be perfectly combined,
says Andreas Böger, Head of New Vehicle Sales Mercedes-Benz Vans and Transporters Germany.
The first delivery of 40 new electric delivery vans will take place at the Fulfillment Center in Berlin-Tempelhof, in which further investments have been made: The site’s infrastructure was simultaneously equipped with 42 charging stations with 22 kW each to charge the vehicles with green electricity.
In addition to reliability and range, the REWE delivery service also focuses on payload when using the eSprinters – the eSprinters can carry up to 1,275 kilograms. For one thing, the delivery of fresh and (deep) chilled products is demanding anyway. In addition to thousands of regional fresh and organic products, REWE also delivers heavy items such as crates of glass bottles to the door. When ordering, customers can also specify their preferred delivery time.
These aspects are incorporated into the optimized route planning so that the routes can be covered in an environmentally friendly manner, but at the same time the vehicles are fully utilized to avoid unnecessary trips or detours. It is therefore planned to charge the e-vehicles only overnight. The Mercedes-Benz eSprinters for the REWE delivery service are therefore equipped with a powerful 150 kW (204 hp) engine and an 81 kWh high-voltage battery. The vehicles were produced at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Berlin-Ludwigsfelde.
The electric vehicles also make a visual statement: The vehicles are wrapped in the newly conceived REWE delivery service design, which, thanks to a scalable design concept, ensures improved recognizability of the service in road traffic, among other things. In addition, the eSprinters are directly recognizable as such by the lettering “This vehicle is 100% electric!”. They will appear in the new design colors mango, fig and peach. The design was developed and implemented in-house by REWE Marketing.
