Sports Bring People Together: Inclusion Right in the Heart of the Neighborhood

What’s it like to play wheelchair basketball? Florian Sörensen, manager of the sales department, tried it out for himself at the inclusive family sports festival in Berlin-Reinickendorf in early July. A few meters away, European Para-Badminton Champion Rick Hellmann was playing with guests. Fifty meters away, children were climbing a tower made of empty water crates, while at the many other booths, people were discussing the theme of the day: the self-determined participation of people with disabilities in social life.

The event was organized by REWE store owner Viet Nguyen Duc in collaboration with the Reinickendorf District Sports Association and Special Olympics Germany in Berlin. The retailer emphasizes: Sports bring people together. That’s exactly why this festival fits in so well here. With our stores, we’re part of the neighborhood. And as REWE employees, we’re proud to live out the values that the Family Sports Festival promotes and to support inclusion efforts.

For Viet Ngyuen-Duc, this commitment isn’t just an added bonus — it’s an expression of what a local market can be: Everyone deserves a chance. If we can help make inclusion a more natural part of everyday life, then that is exactly the kind of community we stand for.

About 1,500 people arrived at the grounds on Reginhardstraße and at the Gustav-Freytag High School. Right in the middle of it all was the REWE Inclusion Mobile, where visitors could try out various sports.

The festival received active support from the trainees in Sales Region 2. They provided information about the apprenticeship program at the REWE booth and helped out at the food stands. The store will donate the approximately 700 euros in proceeds to two nonprofit organizations.

  • Florian Münch (Manager of the Berlin-Brandenburg Badminton Association), Rick Hellmann (Executive Committee Advisor and European Para-Badminton Champion), Daniel Tran (Coach at TSV Spandau 1860 e.V.), and Miranda Galina Wilson (German runner-up, national team player, and Bundesliga badminton player).

  • At the REWE Inclusion Mobile, the focus was on hands-on activities — here, guests could try out basketball and other inclusive sports.

  • The Family Sports Festival offered inclusive sports activities for participants to try out — accompanied by top athletes such as European Para-Badminton Champion Rick Hellmann.
