Pawsome dream jobs: Malte Kramer is Category Manager at ZooRoyal

From 2026, ZooRoyal - REWE Group's modern pet supplies retailer - will be rolling out its own brick-and-mortar stores across Germany. What has so far mainly generated enthusiasm online and in REWE and PENNY stores will then also be experienced locally: a modern store concept, a wide range of specialist pet supplies - and, above all, people who put their heart and expertise into it.

With the rollout of the ZooRoyal-Stores marks the beginning of a new chapter in REWE’s history. In addition to retail sales assistants, we will soon be welcoming completely new, exciting job profiles to our Kolleg:innen. Whether fur hairdresser, Aquarist or Product- and Category Manager: In our series “Pawsome dream jobs” we introduce you ZooRoyal-colleagues who have turned their passion into a profession and show how diverse working with and for animals can be.

Malte Kramer is one of them. He has been working at ZooRoyal for nine years and has found his dream job: Product– and Category Manager for dogs and Cat accessories of the own brand of ZooRoyal. His job? To track down trends, develop new ideas and design products that inspire animals and their owners. For me, this is the dream job because it combines different facets: creativity, commercial thinking and analytical work, says Malte.

So that the products not only look good, but also meet the needs of the animals, Malte tests many things himself – is dog Bonny is happy to help him with this. Together, they identify every minor flaw, and Malte can ensure that the products are truly suitable for everyday use. He draws inspiration for new products from international trade fairs, exchanges with other animal lovers, and customer reviews. The USA in particular is often a pioneer for new trends. One trend that is becoming increasingly popular is the “humanization of pets”: dogs and cats are now full-fledged family members—and their well-being is therefore cared for in the same way as that of any family member. This is also reflected in the products—stylish scratching furniture for cats or, for example, corduroy-look dog beds that match your own couch are becoming increasingly popular.

Pawsome dream jobs: Andrea Ozekker is a groomer at ZooRoyal

Quality is the top priority. Our products should not only be innovative and comfortable, but also take into account the natural needs and instincts of animals. We want to promote well-being and support health. Quality is ensured by REWE’s high quality standards and the excellent and important work of REWE Quality Assurance. Since joining ZooRoyal, Malte has developed around 700 products in collaboration with REWE Purchasing, REWE Quality Assurance, and the REWE Far East team. The range currently comprises around 200 items, with 70 to 100 new products added each year.

Malte’s work does not end with product development. He accompanies the entire process – from packaging design to marketing. He is particularly proud of the upcoming rollout of the ZooRoyal specialty stores: With ZooRoyal, we have reimagined the pet store. ZooRoyal stores are the most modern and innovative stores for pet supplies. This allows us to create a true omnichannel shopping experience and also strengthen our e-commerce business, shop-in-shop formats, and our entire private label in the long term.
