Animal welfare at REWE and PENNY

Our goal is to convert 100 per cent of our own-brand fresh meat to at least level 3 farming methods by the end of 2030.

Our goals

Fresh meat from the meat counter at REWE:

  • Achieved in 2021: 50 percent of fresh meat will meet a minimum husbandry system standard of level 2

Own-brand fresh meat (beef, pork and poultry) at REWE and PENNY in Germany in the self-service range and at the service counter:

  • Almost fully achieved by 2025: 100 percent of own-brand fresh meat to be converted to at least level 2 farming methods by the end of 2025

  • Convert 100 percent of own-brand fresh meat* to at least level 3 farming methods by the end of 2030 (*including unprocessed frozen chicken)

Own-brand fresh chicken at REWE and PENNY in Germany in the self-service range and at the service counter:

  • 2025 not fully achieved: convert at least 30 percent of own-brand fresh chicken meat to stage 3 housing by the end of 2025 (the target of 30 per cent will remain in place until the end of 2026)

Own-brand sausage range from REWE and PENNY (beef, pork and poultry) in Germany in the self-service range and in the service counter range:

  • Almost fully achieved by 2025: 100 percent of the own-brand sausage range to be converted to at least Stage 2 by the end of 2025

Own-brand of milk at REWE and PENNY in Germany:

  • Achieved by 2025: 100 percent of drinking milk converted to at least level 2 farming methods

  • Convert 100 percent of drinking milk to at least level 3 production by the end of 2030
