REWE is further expanding its pioneering role in the area of payment without scanning and is opening its seventh test store with the innovative Pick&Go technology in Hanover. It allows customers to shop conveniently without having to unpack and scan the products at the checkout. The technology is already being used successfully in several cities and customers appreciate it for its convenience and time savings. The REWE test store in the Lister Meile offers a comprehensive range of products on a sales area of around 650 square meters – including a bake-off, salad bar, home-made products and sushi from Eat Happy.

In the test store in Hanover, customers have the option of paying using the so-called scanless method: Customers shop as usual and place the selected products in their shopping basket or in the shopping bags they have brought with them. They then go to one of the eight payment terminals, press “Start” on the monitor in front of them and the list of products they have purchased appears on the display. If everything is correct, customers can then decide whether to pay in cash or by card.

Once again, REWE combines digital innovation with proven services in Hanover: Modern technology provides more convenience and at the same time reduces the workload of store staff. This gives store staff more time for individual advice, questions and services, for example – a combination that REWE is already successfully testing in similar stores. The store in Hanover is open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is operated by a team of around 25 employees under the store management of Jannik Wode.

The new Pick&Go–Location in Hanover shows how modern technologies can make our customers’ everyday lives easier. Our aim is to use innovations in such a way that they create real added value – intuitively, quickly and without complexity. At the same time, we remain committed to ensuring personal advice and high service quality, says Alina Klüger, Project Manager Pick&Go at REWE.

In the test store, shopping and payment work without scanning via camera and sensor technology. REWE is working together with Trigo Vision Ltd, a company specializing in computer vision technology. Trigo’s solution creates a 3D model of a supermarket in order to digitally map the environment and movements within it so that customers can select and return items. Data protection is of central importance here: the images captured of customers are processed in a data-saving manner and are used exclusively to enable shopping without scanning. The system only records data in order to recognize which products are removed or put back.

With the new location, REWE now operates seven stores with Pick&Go–technology in Germany. Following successful openings in Cologne, Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf and two locations in Hamburg, the company is consistently driving this development forward and expanding the range of shopping options without having to scan items. Customers benefit from short shopping times, seamless processes and an overall more convenient experience.
