The donated bags contain long-life foodstuffs that are in particularly high demand at the food banks – including chickpeas, mushrooms, dumplings, pasta, pesto and tortelloni. Demand is high: In Germany, around 1.6 to 2 million people living in poverty seek help from one of the more than 970 food banks every year; long-life products are rarely donated there.

The result of a strong joint effort

Peter Maly, COO of REWE Group, thanks customers for their strong commitment: The enormous willingness to donate shows how much solidarity counts right now. With every single bag, our customers are making an important contribution to people who need support. At the same time, the work of the food banks deserves the greatest recognition – they face immense challenges every day to provide help directly on site. This year, REWE is once again donating additional goods worth 200,000 euros to strengthen the work of the food banks.

Long-life food is one of the items that the food banks receive the least – at the same time, it is indispensable for our daily work. The REWE and nahkauf campaign helps us exactly where the need is greatest. In view of increasing demand and scarcer donations, this result is a strong sign of social cohesion, says Andreas Steppuhn, Chairman of Tafel Deutschland, commenting on the result.
