More and more people in Germany don’t know how to pay for their next purchase. The food banks have become the last hope for many – but even there things are getting tight. REWE and nahkauf are therefore once again launching the nationwide campaign “Gemeinsam Teller füllen”. The aim is to collect as many food donations as possible. From September 8 to 20, customers can buy bags of long-life food in over 4,200 stores or via the REWE online store. These will benefit the more than 970 food banks in Germany.

The focus of the donation campaign is on long-life food, which is particularly scarce and urgently needed by the food banks. In close cooperation with the umbrella organization Tafel Deutschland, this year’s bags contain chopped tomatoes, mushrooms, dumplings, pasta, pesto and gherkins.

Help with just a few steps or clicks: This is how participation works

As part of the campaign, customers have various opportunities to make a donation: Prepared paper bags containing the selected food items are available in the store. These can be purchased at the checkout for 5.00 euros and then handed in at a designated collection point. Alternatively, there is the option of buying a donation card, also worth 5.00 euros, and dropping it into a donation box at the checkout.

Whichever option you choose, the same food is delivered to the food banks. The donations recorded via the checkout system are converted into specific quantities of goods at the end of the campaign and handed over to the local food banks.

Participation is also possible via an order in the REWE online store – both via the delivery service and the pick-up service. As long as the campaign is running, the donation card can be found and ordered online. Customers can add it to their digital shopping cart and complete it together with their regular order. The donations are recorded via the checkout system, converted into food quantities and passed on to the food banks in the same way as purchases in the store.

New: 10 % bonus for donors

This year, registered REWE Bonus users will receive 10% bonus credit per donation bag or donation card purchased. The coupon can be redeemed once and must be activated before scanning the app.

Additional support from REWE

REWE itself is also donating goods worth 200,000 euros to the food banks. This donation complements a long-standing collaboration: REWE has been cooperating with the food banks since 1996 and regularly donates food that is no longer sold but can still be consumed without hesitation. The bag campaign has been running since 2010 and has already donated a total of over 30 million euros worth of food.
