Orange juice is the world’s most popular fruit juice. Yet Brazilian farmers in particular, who harvest every second orange in the world, often suffer from insecure wages. REWE Group works closely with Fairtrade to enable farmers to earn a living wage.

By selling Fairtrade orange juice under our own brands, we are making a direct contribution to long-term improvements on the ground. Since the end of 2023, we have been paying the cooperatives and the respective farmers a voluntary additional contribution that is linked to the quantity of orange juice concentrate sold. Fairtrade orange juice has been available since 2019 at PENNY under the “Paradiso” brand and at REWE under the “REWE Beste Wahl” brand. The juice’s journey is fully traceable – from the individual small farmers’ cooperative to our stores. Customers can be sure that only oranges from Fairtrade-certified smallholder cooperatives were used to make the juice.

Our goal is to offer only certified Fairtrade orange juice at our REWE and PENNY store brands by 2025 and to improve the living and working conditions of small Brazilian farmers by promoting sustainable cultivation.

REWE Group is committed to improving conditions on plantations in Brazil

Small farmers in Brazil face numerous challenges. In addition to Fairtrade certification, we also rely on financial premiums and training to achieve long-term improvements on the ground. In addition to practical content, such as increasing productivity, the training courses also focus on climate-resilient agriculture. Climate plans and demonstration areas show how orange plantations can be managed more efficiently, socially and ecologically with small investments.

The REWE Group has been working closely with Fairtrade for over 30 years.we now have over 300 Fairtrade products in our range. Today, REWE customers can find one of the widest ranges of Fairtrade products in Germany – from roses, juice and chocolate to baked goods, honey and tea.
