For more and more people, the compatibility of work and family is a key factor in choosing or remaining loyal to an employer. REWE Group is therefore opening its doors wider and wider to alternative working models. This includes, for example, the option of not only working part-time, but also managing. With the support of their employer, more and more senior managers are deciding to reduce their working hours in order to give their private concerns and commitments a little more space. And this applies not only in administration, but increasingly also on the shop floor. Whether REWE saleswoman or IT specialist, store manager or logistics specialist: part-time management is feasible. If the team, the line manager and the employer are behind it.

The REWE Group sets a good example in this respect by promoting alternative working models such as part-time management. An excellent example of this is Daniela Gatz, a REWE saleswoman from Falkensee. The part-time model she introduced in the store even won her the REWE “Career and Family” competition. Sibylle von Bassewitz from DERTOUR shows just as impressively how flexible working hours enable her to be there for her parents in need of care and successfully lead a team at the same time.

When Daniela Gatz talks to other retailers about the different working time models in her store, she often gets astonished looks. How do you do that? That wouldn’t work for us! – Those are the most common reactions! laughs the REWE saleswoman. I then have to explain that the whole thing didn’t happen overnight and has developed gradually.

The mother of an eleven-year-old son has been managing the REWE-Marktplatz store in Falkensee since July 2012. Her 50-strong team, which includes employees aged between 18 and 77, including ten temporary staff, benefits from the good work-life balance. You can tell when employees have enjoyed a long weekend with their families, they have a different glow, explains 50-year-old Daniela Gatz. Only satisfied employees can perform well at work.

That’s why she introduced the four-day week, which is also appreciated by her senior managers and her assistant. She has also specifically trained her employees to be all-rounders, so that anyone can step in when needed if someone is ill or there are other staff shortages. This “give and take” has welded the team together, almost like a big family. That’s exactly what Daniela tells skeptical retailers: You have to be able to let go, let people do it, then they feel valued. So much comes back!

DERTOUR also has a flexible working approach. Sibylle von Bassewitz, Director Content Management at DERTOUR Deutschland GmbH, has reduced her working hours to support her parents in need of care. My parents’ need for care prompted me to reduce my working hours. In acute phases, I reduced my working hours to 50 to 70 percent for a short time, but for a good two years now, I’ve been working 80 percent, she explains. The prerequisites for this are cooperative teamwork, understanding superiors and an open communication culture.

Sibylle von Bassewitz continues: It would have been unthinkable for me to work part-time as a senior manager in the past, but priorities have shifted and the time with my elderly parents gives me a lot. I also find the change from desk work very positive. The challenge is that the range of tasks hasn’t fundamentally changed, so it’s sometimes necessary to catch up in the evenings or at the weekend.

My team, especially my four team leaders, are extremely understanding and have made the transition to the 4-day week very easy for me. My boss also has my back at all times and doesn’t put any pressure on me if there are any delays. I’ve had a lot of positive reactions to my reduction in working hours, especially when I explain the reasons.

Shifting the focus of my life a little and reducing my working hours helps me to let go at work and prioritize better. A strong team makes it possible to hand over issues and create space for yourself. This freedom in turn leads to greater satisfaction and creates a new perspective on your own job.
