How do you reflect on the past legislative period?

Looking back, I think one must draw a mixed conclusion. The European Commission started with ambitious goals. Many of these were then squandered in the legislative process, and therefore fell short of expectations.

Professionally, it was probably the most challenging legislative period in the history of the REWE Group: the large number of different initiatives posed major challenges for the entire organization – from the EU Supply chain Directive (CSDDD) to the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR). We do not observe enthusiasm from our colleagues when we present yet another new initiative from Brussels in our internal board meetings.

Which topics will be particularly relevant for REWE Group in the new legislature?

Climate change and its consequences will continue to determine the agenda in the upcoming legislature. Even if some of the plans of the “European Green Deal” have been reversed in the wake of the farmers’ protests, the new Commission will continue to drive forward the transformation of Europe into a “greener” continent. In addition, the EU faces the challenge of getting the stuttering economy within the Union back on track – also amidst the background of foreign policy challenges. Here we hope for relief and a noticeable reduction in bureaucratic requirements.

What are your personal hopes for the EU elections?

I personally hope for a high voter turnout. Unfortunately, EU elections traditionally are perceived less important than federal or state elections. However, most of the legislation now comes from Brussels, and the importance of casting ones vote should not be underestimated.

I am very concerned about the currently predicted rise of extremist parties. I hope for a solid election outcome for the centrist parties and thus a strong signal for an open-minded, forward-thinking Europe. Every vote counts!
