Quality marks

Tested and endorsed

To buy or not to buy? This question can be answered more easily with the aid of quality marks, which offer consumers valuable support in their purchase decisions, making it easier to assess a product’s quality.

There are a large variety of different quality marks in Germany. In the food sector, these marks provide information about the origins or production of the food, whereas in the non-food sector, they tend to endorse the safety or functionality of a product. They are typically awarded by official bodies, which assess and review a product at regular intervals for compliance with specific requirements. This is good news for REWE Group as it means that we can arrange for our own high quality standards to continue to be subjected to rigorous assessment and review by independent third parties.

Below you will find an initial overview of some of the quality marks available. Further information you will find here.

TÜV Exclusive Seal

The TÜV Exclusive Seal has been awarded by REWE Group in cooperation with the TÜV Rheinland Group since the middle of 2009. As the name suggests, it is used exclusively for products from the non-food private label brands at REWE, PENNY and toom Baumarkt, particularly DIY products, clothing, household goods and electronics. The seal signifies that a product has far exceeded statutory quality requirements. Concretely speaking, products have to pass a series of specific additional, rigorous tests before they are allowed to display the TÜV Exclusive Seal. REWE Group’s aim is to set new standards – for the benefit of our customers.

QS Qualität und Sicherheit GmbH

REWE Group has been a member of QS GmbH since 2002, making it one of the first system partners in the meat and meat products, poultry, fruit and vegetables categories. Canny shoppers would do well to look out for the QS certification mark. As it is only ever awarded to foods produced in accordance with the rigorous requirements of the QS quality assurance scheme, the consumer gains transparency over a product’s production processes and peace of mind about the origin of their foods and their means of production.

Gütegemeinschaft Ernährung GmbH (GGE)

In the interests of assuring the highest food quality standards and the animal welfare of farmed livestock, the Gütegemeinschaft Ernährung requirements address the entire production value chain. Its requirements cover the breeding and keeping of livestock, feed quality, the slaughtering and butchering process as well as the store counter.

Verein für kontrollierte alternative Tierhaltungsformen e.V. (KAT)

As a member of the KAT system for the inspection of barn, free-range and organic eggs, REWE Group has to comply with a number of exacting requirements. These include sourcing the raw materials and feed for egg-laying hens only from KAT-certified suppliers, and keeping detailed records on each and every one of the raw material components used. Compliance with the prescribed traceability procedure, known as isotope analysis, and egg labelling requirements are also mandatory.

Geprüfte Sicherheit (GS)

The GS seal is a voluntary safety mark for non-food products signifying “tested safety”. To bear the mark, a product must meet all the applicable requirements for safe operation and use. The mark is awarded by a number of state-certified inspection bodies, including TÜV Rheinland and the VDE (Verband der Elektrotechnik e.V.). This proof of product safety is trusted by consumers and manufacturers both within Germany and throughout Europe.

Oeko-Tex Standard 100

For fashion without side effects. The OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 guarantees that the certified textiles have been tested for pesticides and heavy metals, and that they do not contain any substances which could cause health concerns such as carcinogens or allergens. Safety is assured from yarns through dyes and all the way to accessories.

LGA tested Quality

The TÜV Rheinland tests and certifies products to promote their national and international competitiveness. In this capacity, TÜV Rheinland provides impartial and independent services to companies in all sectors of business

International Featured Standard (IFS) Food

Commercial enterprises have to guarantee the safety of the private label products they sell. IFS Food provides general, internationally recognised auditing standards for the food industry designed to continuously improve safety for consumers

Stiftung Warentest

Stiftung Warentest has been conducting comparative product tests since 1964 to offer consumers independent, objective support in their purchase decisions. Testers buy products anonymously, test them using scientific methods and rate them on a scale from “Excellent” to “Poor”. The results are published in the magazine “test” and on the Internet and are also displayed as a test rating on the products themselves.
