Quality controls in the warehouse


The secret to keeping it fresh

REWE Group warehouses operate an end-to-end incoming goods inspection system with a special focus on fresh produce such as fruit and vegetables, meat, poultry and other chilled products. The smooth running of the process is assured through standardised testing equipment and test procedures in the fresh produce warehouses as well as quality assurance officers who receive regular training in procedural practices and product knowledge. Specific incoming goods inspection parameters include checking fruit temperature and ripeness based on colour charts and precise declarations about the origin of fruit and vegetables, for example.

We also check the food grades (sorting, weight, appearance) and packaging integrity. Finally, all of the results from the incoming goods inspection are stored centrally to be included as an important component of reporting to the supplier.

Temperature monitoring in the warehouse: The cooler the better

The storage temperature of all REWE Group chilled produce storage areas is monitored continuously and systematically. To preserve the products’ optimum condition for as long as possible and ensure the freshness our customers quite rightly expect, the fresh meat storage area at REWE Group, for example, is kept at between 0 °C and 2 °C, while the temperature in the deep freeze storage area is below -22 °C; even colder than the legally required -18 °C.
