REWE Group to launch mobile payment with Yapital in November

REWE Group will introduce mobile payment to REWE supermarkets in November. Smartphone owners will then be able to pay simply, safely and in real time at check-outs using the QR code.

Its partner is Cross-Channel-Payment Yapital, a subsidiary of Otto Group based in Luxembourg. If feedback from customers is positive, this free service will be extended to other REWE Group sales lines.

“REWE claims to be Germany’s most innovative supermarket operator. This concerns the service as much as the product range. With mobile payment, we will be giving customers a new modern payment option,” explained Lionel Souque, member of the REWE Group Executive Board responsible for REWE.

Paying via Yapital couldn't be simpler: customers just need to register once on their Smartphone or web browser and to install the free and password-protected Yapital app on their Smartphone. The customer can then just scan the QR code displayed at the point of sale using the Yapital app to register the purchase amount and to confirm the payment. The transaction occurs in real time.

“The cooperation between Yapital and REWE is a breakthrough in contactless payment in offline retail and a milestone for us on our quest for ‘Everywhere Payment’. Yapital will thus become an integral part of the daily lives of its users,” said Nils Winkler, Chairman of the Board at Yapital. “Many comparisons can be drawn between Yapital and cash. With Yapital, customers can pay quickly and simply, but also safely”. The cooperative REWE Group is one of the leading trade and tourism groups in Germany and Europe. In 2012, the company generated a total external turnover of around 50 billion euros. REWE Group, founded in 1927, operates 15,500 stores with 327,000 employees in 13 European countries. In 2012, around 226,000 employees generated sales totalling 36 billion euros in about 11,000 stores in Germany.

Our sales lines include supermarkets and consumer stores under the REWE, REWE CENTER, REWE CITY, toom and BILLA brands, the PENNY discounter brand, toom Baumarkt DIY stores and B1 discount DIY stores, and the Pro Markt consumer electronics stores. Under the umbrella of DER Touristik, tourism includes the tour operators ITS, Jan Reisen and Tjaereborg, as well as Dertour, Meier’s Weltreisen and ADAC Reisen, and the business travel division FCm Travel Solutions with over 2,100 travel agencies (including DER Reisebüro, DERPART), and the hotel chains lti hotels, Club Calimera and PrimaSol Hotels, and the direct tour operator

For business customers, Yapital is a guaranteed payment solution, providing process reliability and reducing administrative costs. Yapital also covers all trade and service channels and thus enables marketing channels to become sales channels.
