Consumer goods such as textiles, household appliances and toys are increasingly produced in developing and emerging countries, for example in China, India and Bangladesh. REWE Group also procures and sells products from these countries – and therefore has its share of responsibility for the conditions under which these goods are produced.
In this light, REWE Group became a member of BSCI as early as 2008. The BSCI is an association of business companies who have the common goal of improving the labour and social standards in risk countries.
The BSCI Code of Conduct is based on the conventions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the UN Global Compact and the UN Declaration of Human Rights. These requirements include abolishing exploitative child and forced labour and complying with legally regulated remuneration and working hours.
In addition to the Code of Conduct, targeted training and education measures as well as a uniform monitoring system form the basis of the system.
