Austria is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Nonetheless, more than one million people are threatened by poverty in the Alpine Republic, including children and teenagers. This means that they live on less than 60 per cent of the average net income. As a result, those affected have difficulty meeting basic needs.
To help these people, BILLA has partnered up with Caritas, Austria’s largest charitable organisation, since March of 2008. The partners place particular emphasis on underprivileged families. In this way, BILLA launched its first campaign "Aktion Glückskind" ("Operation Happy Child") to kick off the partnership. The company donated part of the proceeds from the sale of Easter eggs to Caritas. As REWE International AG increased these proceeds, a total amount of 145,000 euros was collected.
In the second “Aktion Glückskind" in September of 2008, 70,000 euros were collected from the sale of apples. In the third phase in December of 2008, 55,000 euros were generated through the sale of lucky charms and then passed on to Caritas. The company plans to conduct three such fundraising campaigns per year.
