The working group aims to motivate kindergartens and schools and provide them with active support for modern, child-friendly use of new media in daily educational work. REWE Dortmund, Region West, Southwest and East are cooperation partners of the AKNM. Until the end of 2011 Region West is financing more than 1,400 media-supported workshops in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland Palatinate, primarily in the region of Cologne-Bonn-Düsseldorf-Bochum-Münster. The kindergartens also receive a wide selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. This is either delivered to the workshop day by the nearest REWE store or collected by the children themselves with handcart or by bus. The project was expanded to cover REWE Southwest Region in October 2009. The workshops of the "ArbeitsKreis NeueMedien" (AKNM) for pre-school children dish up the topic "healthy food" once again – this time serving it up on the laptop, beamer and pointer. Mechthild Brachmann, founder of the AKNM, is convinced "It is important that children learn as early as possible how to deal with new media in a responsible way that promotes their development".
The high school teacher and her team visit the kindergartens to teach five to six year olds how to use computer, mouse and pointer: these workshops are topic-based, compact and intensive. 'Bobby Banana' and 'Pineapple Pauline' lead the boys and girls into the fabulous world of vitamins, for instance to the salad factory, where they interactively learn all they need to know about fruit and vegetables. Southwest Region financed around 200 workshops until the end of 2010, and REWE East will finance about 100 workshops after the start in Berlin and Brandenburg in 2011. Up to now REWE has been able to help 30,000 children enjoy the benefits of this health workshop.
