Organic acquacultures

Thanks to controlled breeding in so-called organic acquacultures, the REWE Group will be able to meet the high demand for fresh fish in the future. The REWE Group is relying on the principle of sustainability here, as well.

The Senne is an area in North Rhine-Westphalia that spans 250 km2 and is situated between Gütersloh and Paderborn. There, in the middle of a protected area, brown and rainbow trout and char are bred in the organic aquaculture operations belonging to the premium smoke house Dirk Becker – a partner of REWE GROSSVERBRAUCHER-SERVICE. Breeding occurs in accordance with the strict principles of Naturland, one of the largest associations for organic farming.

Among other things, this means that sites are selected with care in order to protect the surrounding ecosystems. The number of fish in the ponds is limited. Organic aquaculture operations require no chemicals and only employ natural treatment methods, plant-based and also Naturland certified feed from organic farming as well as flour and oil from the processing of edible fish. The latter helps to further preserve the resources of the world’s oceans since no fish have to be caught as feed.

The REWE Group will continue to promote the expansion of organic aquaculture operations with trout and char. In doing so, it is also fulfilling the wishes of consumers. Surveys show that 50 per cent of European consumers consider the label "organic" an important decision-making criterion when buying fish.
