For years now the REWE Group has refrained from selling any foie gras and foie gras products from ducks and geese that have been force fed (e.g, goose foie gras). It ha also stopped selling any meat from force-fed animals.
Cuts of waterfowl (geese and ducks), such as legs and breast, will now only be bought from slaughterhouses and butchers which do not slaughter and/or process any animals which have been force fed for foie gras production. This ensures that only birds from normal breeding methods are used and not any which have been force fed.
The goal is on the one hand to place animal welfare in the foreground and on the other hand to provide quality and safety for the customer.
REWE Group eliminated shelled eggs produced by caged hens from its range at the end of 2009. In 2012, this policy was extended to eggs used in processed products throughout its entire store brand range.
