In addition to its efforts to achieve continuous improvement in energy consumption, REWE Group is also committed to the recycling of waste. Organic waste and so-called recyclable wastes are processed materially or energetically; for example, wastes from foodstuffs are converted into electricity and (remote) heating in biogas systems without producing additional CO2.
The company is able to save just under 20,000 tonnes of CO2 annually in this way. And: the energy generated from the biogas is enough to supply electricity to 7,500 three-person households for one year.
