Cash registers in REWE Group stores ring environmentally friendly. That is because the company relies on Green IT. Configuration, performance, and price – these criteria determine the decision when buying computers. Still, another topic is gaining in importance: the effects of hardware and software on the environment. The term Green IT sheds light on this issue to an increasing degree.
The REWE Group has already broken new ground in designing its IT systems to be more ecological. In doing so, the company tested energy-saving cash register systems in its stores. The integrated computers are limited to the key tasks required for the cash process. Initial results indicate that power consumption can be reduced by over 50 per cent with the aid of an energy-saving cash register system. An impressive number considering that the REWE Group can save approximately 2.83 million kilowatt hours of energy by converting 15,000 cash register systems. This corresponds to approximately the annual power consumption of 800 four-person households.
