Already at the beginning of this month, the magazine Wirtschaftswoche proposed REWE Group’s CEO Alain Caparros – among nine other business leaders – as a “pioneer of the sustainability movement” for the election of the 50 most important persons in the area of sustainability in Germany. In the opinion of the magazine, Caparros has supported and consistently implemented sustainable ideas at a very early stage. Within the framework of the awarding of the German Sustainability Award 2010, the winners of the internet voting, available at http://www.deutscher-nachhaltigkeitspreis.de/85-0-Abstimmung.html, are to be honoured in Düsseldorf in November.
About three years ago, REWE Group has set-up its sustainability strategy based on the four pillars “Green Products”, “Energy, Climate and Environment”, “Employees” and “Social Commitment”, and made it an integral part of its corporate philosophy. Since then, the trading and travel and tourism company has initiated numerous initiatives and implemented in practice several sustainability projects. One example is that REWE Group switched to 100 percent green power as early as 2008 and as the first company in Europe.
Within the framework of its latest project, the introduction of the PRO PLANET label, which has been presented in March of this year on the occasion of REWE Group’s stakeholder forum, the company wants to offer its customers a reliable guidance on products produced in sustainable way. PRO PLANET labels products from conventional production which are considerably less harmful to the environment and the society during their manufacturing, processing or use.
