The REWE Group's Sustainability Report 2008 is the best for the German food retail industry, as shown in the latest ranking of the Berlin-based Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW), which analysed the sustainability reports of around 100 German companies. The analysis is recognised by the different sectors of industry, and its overall rating put REWE Group in 21st place. No other food retailer received better ratings than the REWE Group.
Every two years IÖW analyses sustainability reports of German companies, to determine which one best fulfils the criteria for good reporting: IÖW and the corporate initiative "Future - Verantwortung unternehmen" (Future - taking responsibility) use an extensive set of criteria to examine companies' reports. Overlapping criteria are analysed, such as sustainability strategy and management. The analysis also examines reporting on specific activities of companies, for instance with regard to consideration of employees' interests or ecological aspects of production and responsibility in the supply chain.
