REWE opens another pilot store in Mainz

Following the opening of REWE’s first Green Building in Berlin-Rudow last autumn, REWE Group has applied for a certification of its second Green Building store by DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council). Initial findings from the Berlin-based pilot project are used with the corresponding concepts being implemented in the REWE store in Mainz.

The REWE Green Building in Mainz combines sustainable construction with environmentally-friendly building technology. Sustainable and construction materials low in harmful substances have been used for the construction of the building as far as possible. The heating of the building does no longer depend on fossil fuels thanks to the recovery of waste heat from the store’s refrigerating equipment and the additional use of a heat pump system. Refrigerated shelves equipped with glass doors, LED lighting and energy-saving ventilators help additionally reduce the demand for electricity, for which REWE uses exclusively green power to operate all of its 3,300 REWE stores in Germany. A photovoltaic system on the greened roof of the REWE store covering a surface of 650 square metres and having a total power output of 88 KWp produces enough electricity per year to supply about 20 four-person-household with electric power.

In contrast to the Green Building in Berlin-Rudow, the store in Mainz can be considered a “conventional building” featuring quite a number of sustainability aspects. With its Green Building in Mainz, REWE Group particularly wants to gather know-how that can be used for the modernisation of many stores already existing.

“We are currently developing various Green Building options in order to be able to use concepts that meet best the requirements of every store location”, says Martin Orterer from the REWE Sales Management. “We want to use the practical findings gathered with the pilot stores to implement in future those parts of the concepts that make sense at the different locations  as local conditions and building regulations need to be taken into consideration for each specific location.”

Already with its first Green Building store in Berlin-Rudow, which was awarded the Gold Certificate of the German Sustainable Building Council as the first supermarket worldwide, REWE Group has set standards in the area of sustainable building and operation of retail real estates. “With the REWE Green Building REWE Group emphasises its pioneering role in food trading”, said REWE Group CEO Alain Caparros on the occasion of the store opening in Berlin. He added that the sustainability principle of REWE Group went far beyond its product portfolio.

In line with this strategy, one of the next REWE Green Building stores will be built in Frankfurt/Main. “The architecture will be almost identical with the one in Berlin and will partly go even beyond the overall concept implemented in Berlin”, explains Martin Orterer. Construction is planned to commence next year; further projects are being prepared and planned throughout Germany. In addition, individual measures that have proofed themselves are already being used as standards when building new stores or renovating existing ones.   The lighting concept, for instance, as well as large parts of the refrigeration concept are already being rolled-out in Germany.

With a turnover of more than 50 billion euros and 330,000 employees, REWE Group is one of the leading trading and travel and tourism companies in Germany and Europe. The company, founded more than 80 years ago, is present in 16 countries with more than 15,000 stores. The sales lines comprise super and hypermarkets of the REWE, toom and BILLA brands, the discounter PENNY, the DIY stores of toom Baumarkt and the consumer electronics chain ProMarkt. The travel and tourism division comprises the tour operators ITS, JAHN REISEN and TJAEREBORG as well as Dertour, Meier’s Weltreisen and ADAC Reisen, and about 2,500 travel agencies.
