REWE Donates Food Pyramid at First National REWE Dinner Table Week
Cologne, 22.10.08
Goal: Up to 100 pallets of food valued at 75,000 euros for the needy
Donation in XXL size: A 40-metre long, four-metre tall "Pyramid of food" valued at a minimum of 75,000 euros is the ambitious charity target of the first national REWE Dinner Table Week. REWE supermarkets throughout Germany are advertising the sale of six REWE products (organic Bio eggs, Bio bananas, Bio potatoes, fresh milk, butter, butcher shop ham) by distributing around 12 million flyers from Monday, 27 October through Saturday, 1 November.
REWE will donate ten per cent of the weekly turnover achieved in these products – at least 75,000 euros – to the Dinner Table initiative in the framework of local events in the form of up to 100 pallets of food. Especially those foods that are rarely donated because of their long shelf life, but that are urgently needed for everyday use by the Dinner Tables, will be presented to the charity – items like pasta, rice, sugar, tinned goods, flour, salt, coffee, cooking oil, marmalade and honey.
"REWE has been the largest food donor to the Dinner Tables for years now. We are sending a signal by holding this first national Dinner Table Week to draw attention to the plight of the needy who still need the help of our citizens, in particular in hard times for the economy. A healthy, balanced and – above all – regular diet is not a given for this growing number of people. We are using our national Dinner Table Week to show that it is quite easy for each of us to show solidarity and to get involved", said Jan Kunath, Managing Director of REWE supermarkets in Germany.
"The number of people who need the support of the approximately 800 Dinner Table chapters is growing continuously. There are nearly a million at present. This causes us great concern. On the one hand, because food donations are in increasingly urgent need. But above all because increasing numbers of children and young people are affected. We are pleased that REWE Group is supporting the Dinner Tables in such an extraordinary fashion. To my knowledge, there has never been any nationwide food aid event like this before. We think this additional effort is quite impressive, and we hope that many of the customers feel that way, too", said Gerd Häuser, Chairman of the Federation of German Dinner Tables e.V., a non-profit organisation.
Cologne-based REWE Group is amongst the pioneers in promoting and supporting Germany's Dinner Tables, and today the company is the largest food donor to the charity in Germany through around 5,000 REWE, toom and PENNY stores as well as through central warehouses. For its daily efforts, the trading and travel group has received a certificate of gratitude from the German Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Ursula von der Leyen, for its many years of involvement on behalf of the approximately 800 local Dinner Table Chapters at the anniversary celebration for the Federation of German Dinner Tables e.V.
The approximately 800 Dinner Tables gather high-quality foods that are no longer available for use in the business process. Over 35,000 volunteers distribute these foods for free or for only a symbolic contribution amongst more than 800,000 needy individuals, one-fourth of them who are children and young people.
Founded in Cologne in 1927, REWE Group (REWE, toom, PENNY, toom BauMarkt, ProMarkt, AtlasReisen, DER-Reisebüros, ITS, Dertour) is one of the leading trading and travel companies in Germany and in Europe, today with 290,000 employees and 12,000 stores. Independent REWE retailers make an important contribution to the Group's performance with a turnover of more than 12 billion euros that is achieved by 80,000 employees at more than 3,000 REWE chain store and independent outlets.
