REWE Group takes over German Delhaize supermarkets

Trading group strengthens its store network in the west
The supermarkets that recorded turnover of some € 22 million last year with 132 members of staff, will be brought in line with the REWE concept. There are two locations each in Cologne and Aachen with sales areas of between 700 and 1,500 square metres. "With this takeover we can further strengthen our position in two important cities on our domestic market", explains Lionel Souque, responsible in the REWE Group for the national full range division.
Up to 25,000 articles will be on sale in the supermarkets in future with an above average share of fresh goods. This will be supplemented by a very broad range of ready-to-eat foods, regional products and many international specialities. Serviced counters for meat, cold meats, cheese and delicatessen as well as "hot counters" with food for direct consumption complement the range.
The REWE Group has so far been represented in the sales region west with 400 supermarkets and consumer markets which last year achieved turnover of € 2 billion.
In 2003 the Delhaize Group expanded to Germany. Following a strategic portfolio analysis the enterprise decided at the end of last year to sell the supermarkets in Germany. The sale is still subject to examination by the competition authorities, including the Federal Cartel Agency. The transaction is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2009.
