Caparros: "More and more new workers see career opportunities in trading"

REWE Group has increased the number of trainees at the company by 5.1 per cent to 7,018 (as of 30 September). Of these, 2,788 have just begun their traineeships in this year. The total number makes the company one of the largest and most successful vocational training organisations in Germany. REWE Group offers young people a choice of vocational training in 13 different fields in food trading alone.

"I am pleased that more and more young people are discovering the opportunities offered to them in trading. We are in midst of the process of changing our image. Today more than ever, trading is an international business that offers multiple career opportunities – and this is true especially for REWE", said Alain Caparros, CEO of REWE Group, in announcing the positive trainee figures at the Cologne Head Office today, 15 October. Mr Caparros also characterised the outlook as good that the trainees would be hired after a relatively short training period of two to three years.

The positive development resulted primarily from the strategic business units – REWE/toom, Penny and ProMarkt – which have increased the number of their trainees at a double-digit rate. The largest group of trainees is 2,140 at REWE supermarkets. Some 516 young people chose to train at PENNY, 13 per cent more than in the previous year.
