REWE Group: Reform Course under New Leadership

Dr. Achim Egner leaves REWE – Alain Caparros as the new CEO - Frank Hensel appointed as new Management Board Member for Merchandise


The REWE Group Supervisory Board has rearranged the Management Board of this leading trading and travel company while confirming its commitment to continuing the reform course taken by the firm. At an extraordinary meeting in Cologne, the top oversight body of the company granted the request of Dr. Achim Egner to dissolve his contract as CEO. “Over the past 15 months, I have introduced the essential reform measures needed to make REWE more successful and more international. The points have now been set, and I am certain that the course we have embarked on for REWE will guide the company to future successes,” Dr. Achim Egner explained. Chairman of the Supervisory Board Dr. Klaus Burghard thanked Egner for his service to REWE as a company. The Supervisory Board and Management Board are committed to pursuing the modernisation programme of the co-operative group now begun by concentrating on structural reforms and optimisations to the merchandising business.

Alain Caparros (49), the REWE Group Management Board Member in charge of international operations, discount stores and the bulk customer business, was unanimously elected as the new CEO by the Supervisory Board. Mr Caparros was first named to the executive body in April 2005 as a proven expert in trading.

To further strengthen the merchandising business, Frank Hensel (48) – previously a Management Board Member for REWE Group Austria – was unanimously elected to the Management Board of REWE Group. Mr Hensel has been in charge of retailing, private label brands and central purchasing at REWE Group Austria for this highest-selling foreign subsidiary of the number three in European food trading since August of 2005.

REWE Management Board Member Josef Sanktjohanser (55) will continue to be in charge of the specialty stores and bulk customers / co-operations business as well as the Public Affairs Department; Norbert Fiebig (47), as the Management Board Member in charge of Finances and Travel, will also be in charge of IT, logistics, accounting / central settlements and real estate properties. Management Board Member Dr. Stephan Fanderl (42) will continue to lead the high-turnover supermarket and hypermarket businesses along with wholesale for the domestic German market.

With a turnover of 41.7 billion euros, REWE Group is the number three in European food trading. The turnover results of the last business year were achieved by around 260,000 employees working at 11,800 stores in 14 European countries.
