Sales in Fiscal Year 2010 Climb to 53 Billion Euros

REWE Group achieved its budgetary targets in fiscal year 2010 and increased turnover by four per cent to about 53 billion euros (based on figures not yet certified). REWE Combine (excluding independent retailers and at-equity participations) increased its turnover in the past year by 3.5 per cent from 37.7 billion euros (2009) to 38.9 billion euros. Group growth in Germany posted 4.0 per cent and was stronger than abroad, where sales rose by 2.2 per cent in 2010.

“REWE Group once again proved its economic strength and vitality in 2010. All of the business segments, both in Germany and abroad, contributed to our growth,” noted Alain Caparros, CEO REWE Group. “While developments for the REWE supermarkets were clearly above average for the industry, PENNY in Germany, operating in an environment difficult for discounters, did not meet our expectations. Overall, we based our planning on the assumption that the year 2010 would be even more of a challenge than 2009. So we are satisfied with the development of turnover in REWE Group.”

Sales for the National Full-Range Stores (REWE, toom hypermarkets) posted a new record in growth over the previous year (+6.4 per cent) for the more than 80-year-old company history, a figure of 14.5 billion euros. Major contributing factors to this success were strong growth on current space thanks to strategic and conceptual evolvement plus the acquisitions of Sky, Delhaize and Tengelmann.

The business segment International Full-Range Stores (BILLA, MERKUR, BIPA, ADEG) encompasses the activities of REWE Group in Austria, Italy and Eastern Europe. The stores realised sales of nine billion euros (2009: 8.9 billion euros), corresponding to a plus of 1.2 per cent. A highly positive development in Austria, Russia and the Czech Republic is contrasted by the sale of the BILLA stores in Poland which reduced turnover.

PENNY in Germany lost 1.2 per cent in turnover in a highly competitive environment and realised 6.9 billion euros in turnover. Abroad, the discounter grew by 3.5 per cent, whereby Romania (+4.3 per cent) and the Czech Republic (+3.8 per cent) recorded above-average development. Total turnover in Germany and abroad of 10.3 billion euros (+0.3 per cent) hovered around the level of the previous year.

For toom Baumarkt DIY Stores, the strict reorientation to classic DIY business was reflected in the positive development of turnover. The stores increased sales by 3.9 per cent to 1.9 billion euros (2009: 1.8 billion euros). ProMarkt recorded an upward leap in sales of 11.4 per cent to 613 million euros (2009: 550 million euros), especially as a result of the integration of the former Wegert consumer electronic stores and the launch of online business. Turnover in the business segment “National Specialist Stores” came to 2.5 billion euros (+5.6 per cent) in 2010.

The Travel and Tourism segment of REWE Group underwent a definitely positive development in 2010. The Travel and Tourism segment and its sub-segments Tour Operators, Travel Agency Sales and Business Travel showed above-market development. The building-block tours division in particular profited from the major events of the Football World Cup and the Olympic Games (+8.2 per cent sales revenues). Even better development of the package tours division (+1.8 per cent sales revenues) was prevented by the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano in the spring of 2010. Consolidated billed sales for the business segment “Travel and Tourism” rose by 4.4 per cent to 4.3 billion euros (2009: 4.2 billion euros).

At the beginning of 2011, REWE Group divested its 50-per cent share of the B2B joint venture transGourmet Holding S.E. The Swiss COOP and REWE Group had bundled their cash-and-carry business and food service under the umbrella of transGourmet Holding. The partner COOP took over the 50-per cent share from REWE Group. The turnover in the business segment “B2B” rose in comparison with the previous year from 5.8 billion euros to 6.2 billion euros (+6.7 per cent). Food service increased turnover by three per cent to 2.4 billion euros, and the C&C business in Germany and abroad grew by 9.3 per cent to 3.9 billion euros.

REWE Group will present the details of its business results for 2010 during the balance sheet press conference held in Cologne on 24 May 2011.
