HDE gives award to the CO2-neutral supermarket in the category Food
The Handelsverband Deutschland (HDE) - Der Einzelhandel (Trade Association Germany - Retail) yesterday (23 February) gave first place in the category "Food" to the REWE Green Building during the awards ceremony "Stores of the Year 2010". The REWE store with a sales floor area of more than 1,800 square metres was opened in Berlin in November 2009 and is CO2 neutral. Compared to a standard building, it consumes almost 50 per cent less energy.
The managing director of HDE, Stephan Genth, praised the REWE Green Building as "innovative and ground-breaking" during the award ceremonies in Berlin. "REWE Group's claim of environmental sustainability is made tangible and understandable for customers by the construction of the REWE Green Building," noted Genth. "The company has set a genuine benchmark in the field of 'sustainability' and proves in measurable fashion that it is possible to save a lot of money using environmentally-friendly technologies. There is a lot of potential for the future in this area."
The CO2-neutral Green Building is a supermarket designed for environmental sustainability in accordance with the very latest findings. The heating, ventilation, lighting, air conditioning and refrigeration systems of the supermarket do not pollute the environment with CO2 emissions. Further special features include daylight architecture in combination with energy-saving construction techniques, best insulation, sustainable materials and the use of energy from renewable sources. The bottom line is that the Green Building concept store uses 50 percent less energy than a standard store. The REWE Green Building is the first supermarket in the world to be awarded the German Seal of Approval in Gold by the Gesellschaft Nachhaltiges Bauen (Society for Environmentally Sustained Construction).
The respected awards to the "Stores of the Year" were announced for the sixth time during the course of this year's trade real estate congress in Berlin. The REWE Green Building took the award over strong competitors. A total of more than 40 applications were received in all of the categories - more than ever before in the history of the "Stores of the Year" awards. The eleven prominent members of the jury from industry, trade and trade consultants ultimately handed the award to the REWE Green Building, honouring the aspect of environmental sustainability as outstanding. "That was the special extra point that made the difference in this category," according to one juror.
"We are using the practical findings obtained from the pilot project 'REWE Green Building - Concept Future' to define long-term a strategy for the future roll-out of the overall concept or of specific concept components," said Martin Orterer from Management Sales National. "We are extremely delighted to be named 'Store of the Year 2010' and are very proud to receive this highly respected award. We regard this as a confirmation of our approach," noted Orterer.
The REWE Green Building was nominated for another highly respected award on 4 February. It is one of the five candidates for the "Sustainable Energy Europe Award 2010" announced by the EU Commission and which will be given out during the Sustainable Energy Week of the European Union in Brussels on 23 March.
