REWE Green Building Receives "Environmentally-friendly Trading Property 2010" Award
Cologne/Munich, 04.10.10
Jury convinced by trend-setting CO2-neutral supermarket in Berlin
Another prestigious award for the REWE Green Building: within the framework of the ExpoReal on Monday (4.10.) the German Environmental Management Association (B.A.U.M. e.V.) awarded the title of "Environmentally-friendly Trading Property 2010" to the supermarket in Berlin (
www.gebaeudewettbewerb.de – available in German only). The jury totalling 14 persons headed by Dieter Brübach, member of the management board at B.A.U.M., found the overall concept of the CO2-neutral supermarket the most convincing out of the 16 competition entries.
According to the latest studies, buildings today already account for 40 per cent of global primary energy consumption. Today it is therefore all the more important that sustainability is an integral part of trading property. Thanks to innovative technology combined with sustainable construction design, the REWE Green Building only consumes half as much energy as a conventional supermarket. That impressively illustrates what potentials can be exploited here", explained Dieter Brübach, member of the management board at B.A.U.M, justifying the jury's decision.
"We utilise the practical know-how derived from the pilot project 'REWE Green Building – Concept Future' to define a long-term strategy for the future roll-out of the overall concept or specific concept components", explained Harald Fischer, construction director at REWE national in Munich. "Each individual award illustrates that REWE is on the right track with its concept", commented Fischer.
In 2009 the REWE Green Building was the first supermarket in the world to be awarded the German Gold Seal of Quality by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). In February 2010 the REWE Green Building also took first place in the category "Food" at the presentation of the "Stores of the year 2010" award for retailing by the Association of German Retailers (HDE) because of its sustainable construction design. Finally in May the REWE Green Building was awarded the "Climate Protection Partner of the Year 2010" prize in the category "successful projects".
The REWE Green Building with a floor space of more than 1,800 square meters was opened in November 2009 in Berlin. The heating, ventilation, lighting, air conditioning and refrigeration systems of the supermarket do not burden the environment with CO2 emissions. Another special feature of the building is its daylight architecture, which is combined with energy-saving technology, the best possible insulation, sustainable materials and the use of regenerative energy. Consequently the Green Building only uses half as much energy as a standard supermarket.
Mainz: Green Building in a conventional construction
Following the opening of the first Green Building in Berlin-Rudow on 6 September 2010, REWE registered its second supermarket for certification by the DGNB. Initial know-how gained from the Berlin pilot project was used and corresponding concepts implemented in the REWE supermarket in Mainz.
"Currently we are designing several variants of our Green Buildings, so that we can provide the right concept for each different location", explains Harald Fischer. "We want to use the empirical values from the pilot stores in order to subsequently implement concept components that are worthwhile at the specific locations, because we have to take specific peculiarities into account depending on the location or building regulations that apply there."
The REWE Green Building in Mainz combines sustainable construction design with environmentally-friendly building technology. For building it sustainable and low-polluting construction materials were mainly chosen. Thanks to energy recovery from the refrigeration units’ waste heat and a supplementary heat pump system, no fossil fuels are needed for heating the rooms. In addition, glass doors on the refrigerated shelves, LED lighting and energy-saving fans reduce the energy requirement, and REWE covers this remaining power from green electricity for all 3,300 REWE supermarkets in Germany. On the greened roofs of the REWE supermarket a photovoltaic system measuring 650 square meters with a total capacity of 88 kilowatts provides electricity for about 20 four-person households per year. Another positive aspect of the roof greening is that it not only serves as a colonisation biotope for insects and birds but also has a positive impact on local climatic conditions and rain water management.
In contrast to the Green Building in Berlin-Rudow, the building in Mainz is a "conventional construction", into which the numerous sustainability aspects were integrated. With its Green Building in Mainz REWE Group aims to gain know-how for its many existing buildings.
Frankfurt: Green Building based on the Berlin model
Following REWE Group's overall sustainability strategy, one of REWE's next Green Building supermarkets will be built in Frankfurt/Main. "The construction design of the building will be almost identical to the one in Berlin and thanks to its overall concept in some parts it will even go beyond the original Green Building", explained Harald Fischer. Commencement of construction is planned for the coming year and additional projects are being prepared or planned throughout Germany. REWE already implements individual measures that have proved themselves as standard features in all new buildings. For instance the lighting concept and large parts of the refrigeration system design are now already incorporated in the national rollout.
