Rautakesko to become new partner of the DIY purchasing alliance tooMax-x

tooMax-x, the purchasing cooperation of bauMax, REWE Group and Coop (Switzerland), is expanding through the addition of an important purchasing partner on the international trade scene: the Finnish home improvement retailer Rautakesko. This will make tooMax-x the third largest purchaser of home improvement products in Europe. The cooperation of the four leading European operators of home improvement stores provides numerous advantages for both customers as well as suppliers. The planned purchasing cooperation is being submitted to the monopolies office for approval.
The expansion of the purchasing cooperation with Rautakesko opens up the possibility of developing the potential of international cooperation.
- For suppliers, the depth of distribution with the new partner will be enlarged both in respect of purchasing quantities as well as sales countries as the members of tooMax-x are active in more than 20 countries throughout Europe.
- Cooperation partners have the possibility of achieving synergy effects and an increase in efficiency.
- For customers, this means that products will be marketed in a better price-performance ratio.
Rautakesko, a subsidiary of the Finland based Kesko Corp. , has 320 home improvement stores in 8 countries in Scandinavia, the Baltic States, Belarus and Russia. With retail stores' gross sales amounting to Euro 3.9 billion, Rautakesko is the market leader in its area, and among the five biggest in DIY sector in Europe. The retail stores are under the K-rauta, Rautia, Byggmakker, Senukai and Oma retail chains. Rautakesko manages its chains, combines their purchasing power, arranges efficient logistics, acquires store sites and ensures strong marketing and development support for the stores.

bauMax is a family company which started business operations more than 30 years ago in Austria. Today, bauMax is market leader in the DIY sector in eight central and south-east European countries with a total of 130 home improvement stores. Alongside Austria, these are the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Rumania and Bulgaria. Gross sales of Euro 1.25 billion were achieved in 2007 with 8,285 employees.
REWE Group is one of the leading German and European retail trade and tourism groups. The company is the second-largest retailer of foodstuffs in Germany .In the food trade, specialist stores and tourism, the REWE Group achieved total sales in Europe of Euro 45 billion (net) in 2006. In Germany, REWE operates around 400 “toom BauMarkt” home improvement stores and garden centres with sales of more than Euro 2 billion. This puts “toom BauMarkt” in third place among home improvement stores in Germany.
Coop is the second largest retail trade business in Switzerland. With its customer proximity and organisation in five sales regions, Coop operates more than 1,700 sales outlets and has more than 48,000 employees. Coop achieves annual sales of around Euro 10.8 billion and a share in the Swiss retail trade market of around 15.8 percent. With 68 sales outlets and sales of around Euro 450 million, coop Bau+Hobby is the largest retailer in the home improvement and do-it-yourself sector in Switzerland.
