E-commerce shop adds new impetus to Cologne-based consumer electronics chain

The consumer electronics chain ProMarkt, part of Cologne-based REWE Group, takes over the insolvent myby GmbH & Co. KG in which Arcandor group held a majority participation.  At www.myby.de, myby offers a broad range of products at low prices in segments such as traditional consumer electronics, household appliances, computer/IT, telecommunications and photography. The takeover is subject to approval by the federal German cartel authority. It was agreed to keep the purchase prices confidential. All employees of the Düsseldorf-based myby GmbH & Co. KG will be taken over by ProMarkt, too.

"By taking over myby we will add to our strong store base of large-scale specialist outlets a powerful e-commerce shop which will contribute new impetus to our business. This is of strategic importance for our future development, said Jan Kunath, head of the Strategic Business Units B2B and specialist stores at REWE Group. Daniel Boldin, chairman of myby's senior management, said: "We are happy that we have found REWE Group as new owner as it will give our business and our employees reliable future prospects. For Matthias von Puttkammer, director of ProMarkt's senior management, the takeover of myby is an ideal supplement to the existing business model: "Myby offers us a new sales channel that will allow us to position ourselves very well in the German online specialist trade thanks to the skills and the experience of its employees as well as the established systems and processes."

Some weeks before, the Cologne-based consumer electronics chain had already acquired ten Promarkt.de locations from the Berlin-based ProMarkt Handels GmbH. The chain stores located in Eberswalde, Halberstadt, Cottbus I and II, Bobbau/Wolfen, Bremen, Fulda, Waghäusl, Potsdam and Rendsburg have a total staff of 200 employees. Seven of the ten stores have already been transformed according to ProMarkt's "Disount plus Service" concept and were re-opened. The remaining three stores will be converted in the first quarter of 2010.
