


The acquisition of a stake in Budgens in the UK is REWE's first step into foreign markets.
REWE enters the Southern European market with PENNY MARKET Italia SrL.
REWE continues to expand its travel and tourism business by acquiring the ITS tour operator from Kaufhof. In the north of France, REWE takes over 40 discount outlets from the EUROGROUP Partner Vendex and reorganises the stores under the PENNY brand.
In Austria, REWE takes over the BML Group with the sales channels BILLA supermarkets, MERKUR food stores, Mondo discount stores, Emma neighbourhood stores, and BIPA drugstores. The first outlets are launched in Hungary (PENNY) and Poland (miniMAL). REWE acquires 40 per cent of the ordinary shares of the German private TV channel ProSieben Media AG.
The BLV-Großverbraucher-Service (commercial customer service) in Munich is acquired on 1 January. This expands REWE Group's commercial customer business throughout Germany. The Company is integrated into REWE-Wibu, Mainz, which is converted into REWE GROSSVERBRAUCHER-SERVICE and becomes a branch of REWE-Zentral AG.
REWE takes over 52 Götzen and 138 Stinnes DIY stores. This moves toom BauMarkt into the leading group of companies in the DIY branch.
REWE strengthens its position as the market leader in Austria with the takeover of 162 Meinl stores.
After the acquisition of the DER Group, which owns the tour operators DERTOUR and ADAC-Reisen and 360 DER travel agencies, REWE Touristik becomes one of the key divisions of the REWE Group.
