Product responsibility from the beginning - Diversity of food trading displayed on 1,700 square metres
Rethinking. Conscious trading. These are the words that will stand above REWE Group's display at the Farm Experience section of the International Green Week in Berlin (IGW) held from 18 to 27 January 2008, where the company will demonstrate the freshness and sustainability of its products all the way from farm production to processing and arrival on store shelves at 3,000 REWE supermarkets and 2,000 Penny discount stores. Visitors to the 1,700 square metres of show area in Hall 3.2 will get to see a futuristic, environmentally sound greenhouse; watch as peppers, grapes, and strawberries are sustainably planted in partnership with REWE Group; or enjoy the scent of blooming fruit trees. The quality assurance experts at REWE Group will allow visitors to watch them at their daily work, demonstrating just how much effort REWE Group puts into quality of its private label products. The production subsidiaries W. Brandenburg (a butcher shop) and Glockenbäckerei (a bakery) will also show how they produce sausages and breads.
"The German food trade is facing far-reaching changes. The retail and wholesale business sectors will change dramatically over the coming decade. Sustainability, regionalism, protection of the climate and environment, as well as global competition for agricultural resources are only some of the key challenges. REWE Group stands for rethinking and conscious trading. As one of the leading food trading companies, we act responsibly from the very beginning: to offer diverse, high-quality, healthy, but also affordable foods. This sense of responsibility is on display at the Farm Experience", said Alain Caparros, CEO of REWE Group, at the company's head office in Cologne. The International Green Week would be a welcome opportunity to give the over 400,000 visitors and around 5,000 journalists from around the world an impression of the answers REWE Group has come up with for confronting the industry's challenges. "We see the Farm Experience not only as a place for all participating companies to show off their services, we see it also as a workshop for ideas and future innovation. This makes me even more excited that REWE Group will be represented there this year", said Caparros.
Founded in Cologne in 1927, REWE Group (REWE, toom, Penny, toom BauMarkt, ProMarkt, AtlasReisen, DER-Reisebüros, ITS, Dertour) - with 43.5 billion euros in turnover, 270,000 employees, and 12,000 stores - is the second largest food trading company in Germany and the number three among European trading and travel and tourism companies.
